Reading at Hugo House

A client from Hugo House, Janée J. Baugher, hosted an event with NAMI Seattle and Office of Arts & Culture in Seattle. The Events Coordinator at Hugo House reached out and connected me with this client to help aid in the creation of some media for her memoir reading and Q&A event being held at the Hugo House Seattle.

I worked directly with Baugher to collaborate in the creation of the poster. In addition, I also created an advertisement they could use on social media as well as a thumbnail for the Events website page for Hugo House.

Using Adobe Illustrator I created the layout and imagery for the media. I started with a few sketches and color palette experiments, then outlining in Illustrator and finalizing typefaces and sponsorship placements. Finally, I cross-checked any last details with the client and ensured the file was print-ready.

The challenge here was to breach a sensitive subject but make it engaging enough to pique curiosity. I used colors that represent calm, serenity and hopefulness, and figures that could represent any one of us.

The client, Janée J. Baugher, was ecstatic and offered a testimonial.

For the social media post, I also used Illustrator, and used the same branding design as the poster. I took a few of the same elements and translated them to a smaller design format that would work on a social media post, like Instagram, ensuring quick readability and working within the UI already in place in-app.

I did the same with the small thumbnail for Hugo House to use on their Events page of their website.

For this event, I had a lot of specifics for what the event entailed, including multiple sponsors. This is a subject that means a lot to me, so I wanted to make sure I represented the event, as well as the memoir, as well as I could, and work with the desires of the both the client and Hugo House.
