Recyclables vs. Compostables

Digital and Printable Infographic

The process began as a few different sketches on paper with collections of information. After feedback, a more solid illustration was created in Procreate, then transferred over to Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop.

Recycling and Composting aren’t things we always think about to compare, and it is ultimately a very complex topic. My task was to research and create an approachable infographic in a digital format that could also be transferred to a physical form. I went with a size that would be easily printable as a poster. I envisioned the target audience being teenagers and young adults.

Starting from an array of sketches and ideas to display information that I had collected, I knew my biggest challenge would be creating something that someone could easily understand when such complex and dense information is presented.

My concept was to create a literal “road-map” of the process of recyclables and compostables throughout their entire life cycle, in order for a consumer to easily compare the two options and make an informed decision and arm them with knowledge on the topic.

I built more on my knowledge of Illustrator, and aimed to hone my skills on more techniques with Photoshop and using the two programs in tandem. I also furthered my knowledge typographical hierarchy.

From there each asset was created with a variety of techniques. Some assets were created from digital tracing in Photoshop of a hand-drawn image, while a few were fully digital drawings in Illustrator, and lastly creating vectorized images in Photoshop and transferred back over to Illustrator to further adjust.
